Clarence Boykins retires after 29 years with Tucson City Government

Everyone who's anyone was present for the gala send off party for CLARENCE BOYKINS, at the Viscount Hotel in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday, 29 January 2005. After 29 years of service to the City of Tucson, Mr. Boykins retired to pursue other dreams as head of the Black Chamber of Commerce, and we hear he has some other political aspirations, so we will be seeing his name around.
The party was organized and MC'd by Mr. Boykins' sister, Pernella Burke. Mr. Boykins was joined by his lovely wife Deborah, and his proud mother, Evelyn Gibson. The Boykins are a family blessed with both brains and beauty as the family members all attest to. Mr. Boykins' beautiful daughters, Dayna Harris and Dionne Rich, and his niece Donna Harris kept the dance floor hopping, everyone was grooving to the music of bigpapa Johnson. Dayna had a backless black shirt with a bandana black/white skirt, which she accented with black steletos. Dionne wore a hot pink floor length dress. The dress had a halter top, and the hot pink was a beautiful contrast to Dionne's dark skin. Donna Harris was elegant in a taylored classic white pantsuit. The small members of the Boykins family, Taylor Boykins and Kiona Thompson looked lovely too, see all their pictures on the news from dogpatch blog.
Mr Boykins heads the Tucson Chapter and the Arizona State Chapter of the NAACP, and has been an important voice for the African American people in the state. Richard Fimbres, director of governer Janet Napolitano's Public Safety Department, and past president of LULAC, said that Clarence Boykins has been a friend to all the Hispanic People in Arizona, and has never hesitated to stand up for what's right. Mary Fimbres, executive aide to Councilman Steve Leal, accompanied Richard to the gala event, you can see them dancing in one of our photos.
Congressman Raul Grijalva presented Mr. Boykins with a U.S. Congressional letter, which was read into the minutes of the House of Representatives. The letter chronicled Mr. Boykins life of public service to all the people of Arizona, and should be availble on this site soon. Congressman Grijalva was accompanied by his lovely wife, Ramona; and his beautiful daughter, Adelita and her husband Sol.
The Grijalvas celebrated Adelita's wedding to Sol last December at St. Augustine's Cathedral for the mass, and the reception was at the historic El Casino Ballroom with over 600 guests. Adelita serves on the Tucson Unified School District's board, and her husband, Sol is an executive aide to Pima County Supervisor, Richard Elias.
Tucson City Council member Steve Leal presented Mr. Boykins with a copper letter thanking him for all his hard work for the City of Tucson. Councilman Leal noted that Mr. Boykins high school training in both drama and tackle football had prepared him for Tucson City Politics, which is a combination of high drama and contact sport. Councilman Leal was accompanied by friend Martha McGrath, City Marketing Manager for Wild Oats Natural Markets in Tucson. Martha is the author and photographer of the news from dogpath.
Anita Smith-Etheridge, executive assistant to Tucson City Manager, read Mr. Boykins a letter of apprecitation from city staff, and the director of the Tucson Urban League presented a gift and then everyone took to celebrating on the dance floor.

Who else was there? Xcouncilman Chuck Ford, Richard Barker, Isabel Garcia, Judge Fenton and his wife Marjorie, Carl Bedford, Tamra O'Brien and more.
